In order to advance sequentially in Ashtanga Yoga, it is important to commit to and maintain a daily practice.

Shala Practice Notes
• Wear comfortable clothing
• Bring your yoga mat and a towel (we have mats you can rent or purchase if you do not have one)
• Try to drink water before and after, but not during class
• There is a Shower at The Yoga Shala, so you can do your practice, shower, and head to work.

 

Krista Shirley has created The Yoga Shala in order to help people in Central Florida discover the amazing benefits of daily yoga practice in this time honored method. In this supportive atmosphere students of all levels will study Ashtanga Yoga each day and begin to understand how it will enrich all aspects of their lives.



Krista Shirley is the owner, director and teacher at The Yoga Shala. She has recently been entrusted by her teachers to carry on the traditional teachings of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga as they have taught her. Krista is the only teacher in Central Florida authorized to teach the Traditional Ashtanga Yoga Method by the Shri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute.

It is the goal of The Yoga Shala to empower people in Central Florida to take control of their own health and wellness through the daily education of physical Yoga asanas, mental focus, and breath work.  Ashtanga Yoga, done daily, will increase flexibility, strength, endurance, and physical and mental balance; it will cleanse the internal systems of the body and provide a healthy source of focus and dedication in ones life.

How Often Should I Practice?
You should practice daily (6 days per week with Saturdays and New and Full Moon days to rest). However, if you cannot practice 6 days a week, then you should space out your days of practice (i.e. Mon/Wed/Fri or Tues/Thur/Sun). If your time each day is limited, you will benefit from a shorter practice rather than no practice at all.

Method
The Yoga Shala offers classes in the traditional Ashtanga Mysore Method; the safest, most effective way to learn Yoga!  In Mysore style classes students will work individually with Krista to learn Ashtanga Yoga.  Students will learn postures one by one, and as each posture is mastered, students will gradually build up his/her primary series practice.  The focus of this individualized method is on personalized instruction – imagine a private Yoga lesson in a group setting.

This is the way that yoga is taught by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Rangaswamy in Mysore, India and why it has come to be known as “Mysore Style” teaching.  For more information on Ashtanga Yoga please visit www.kpjayi.org

Ashtanga Yoga is a practice that is to be done daily.  In order to fully benefit from this ancient practice, students need to commit to this practice and allow growth and change to occur.  As in India, students at The Yoga Shala are asked to make a monthly commitment and come to class 3-6 days each week. 


Krista humbly dedicates The Yoga Shala to her teachers, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, Sharath Rangaswamy, and Saraswati Rangaswamy.  Their passion and devotion to Ashtanga Yoga has touched Krista, and so many other people around the world.  It is now Krista’s duty to share this tradition in the proper manner, just as she has been taught.

Guruji, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, passed away on May 17th - it is Krista's honor to open the doors to the shala in Guruji's name.  This space will be a real testament to his life's work.
